Reprint of rare 1864 pamphlet. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 21 , pages; The Institute for Colored Youth, founded in 1837, owed its existence to a reformed West Indian slaveholder, and was under the auspices of the Society of Friends. Octavius V. Catto was a teacher, a strong proponent of black rights, and was assassinated in 1871. His death prompted outrage not only in the African-American community, but in the white community.
